Single Mobility Electric Scooters
All airlines typically allow one mobility scooter aboard per flight. Keep that in mind when you are booking and inform them that you intend to bring your scooter aboard.
Per general airline requests the height of your scooter should not exceed 86 cm when folded and the battery must be either a ‘gel cell’ or a ‘dry’ battery. Avoid ‘wet’ battery types as they will not be permitted aboard the aircraft.

Know your equipment
Before you plan your wondrous adventure, just check that you have all the details about your equipment. Fortunately when purchasing your scooter you should have received a MSDS that will provide you with all the information that you need! If not just contact us at Out and About Healthcare and we will be happy to assist you.
Some of the information that you will need to know regards battery types (Lithium, gel, LED) and size (Voltage and amp hour), the make and model of your scooter and the size of the scooter when folded (Width x height x length). Book Your Flight
The second item on your list should be booking the flights. As with any booking experience it is recommended that you or someone close to you is in charge of all the bookings. Please be sure to inform the travel agency or airline of your mobility scooter as they will be able to assist you with any arrangements or additional bookings that are necessary.
Don’t forget to ask if they need any extra information such as the specs for your scooter and medical clearance. If you believe that you will need further assistance at the airport request to hear what they offer. Most airports provide services such as temporary wheelchair assistance, easier customs screening and such.
Any questions that you have about traveling with your mobility scooter should be answered with a quick meeting or phone call to your travel agent/airline. Before the Airport
Now before you head to the airport it is crucial that along with your passport and keys that you also carry your Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or a Travel Safety Certificate which specifies the battery make (something you will receive when purchasing the scooter). It is recommended that you also take a few photos of your scooter and store them in a safe place in case your possessions are damaged during the flight. For extra measure and if possible you may also want tape or cover some parts of your scooter to prevent damage.
In addition, if the airline has asked you to remove the battery, do so. Make sure that the connections are sealed and it is properly stored in a bag or suitcase of its own, or as your airline has instructed. Feel free to ring us or your airline with any questions regarding about this part of the process.

At the Airport
Qantas advises that domestic flyers requiring mobility aids are required to check in 60 minutes before departure and international flyers are to be there at least 2 hours before their flight. This is just a precaution as it can take a little while to get everything sorted and organized before your flight.
In most circumstances your scooter will have to be stored in the holder. They may ask you to remove the battery (if you haven’t already) and the battery may have to be taken with you aboard as carry on. They will then assist you with any additional bookings such as wheelchairs and guide you through to your gate.
After the Airport
After you touch down but before you leave the airport and embark into the great beyond, make sure to check over your equipment for any damages. If you spot any be sure to immediately report it to the baggage service team at the airport.
